CCTV sewer pipe inspection and Robotic sewage pipe cleaning

CCTV sewer inspection and robotic sewer cleaning are the two technologies that turned pipeline maintenance from guesswork into engineering. Together they let an operator see exactly what is happening inside a line, fix the cause rather than the symptom, and prove the result, all without opening the ground.

CCTV inspection: seeing the problem

A robotic crawler fitted with an HD pan-and-tilt camera and LED lighting is launched through a manhole and driven along the pipe, recording continuous video and still images referenced to the distance travelled (chainage). Push cameras cover smaller building drains from 50 mm upwards. The operator codes every observation to an international standard, such as WRc MSCC or PACP: cracks, fractures, joint displacement, root intrusion, infiltration, deposits, deformation and corrosion. The deliverable is a report that locates each defect to the centimetre and grades the structural and service condition of every section.

Robotic cleaning: fixing the cause

Most sewer failures begin with something that should not be there. Robotic cleaning removes it:

  • High-pressure jetting clears grease, sediment and sludge and flushes the line.
  • Robotic cutters grind away hardened scale, concrete intrusions, protruding laterals and roots that jetting cannot shift.
  • Chain flails and milling heads restore the full diameter in heavily encrusted pipes.

Because the cutter is camera-guided, the operator sees exactly what is removed and stops when the pipe wall is clean, which protects the host pipe and prepares it for lining if required.

Why they belong together

Inspection without cleaning gives an incomplete picture; deposits hide defects. Cleaning without inspection is blind; you cannot prove the line is clear or know what caused the blockage. The combined workflow is survey, clean, re-survey, and only then decide whether lining, point repair or routine maintenance is needed. For a facility manager, that means a maintenance budget spent on evidence, not on repeated emergency call-outs.

Our capability

Applied Pipeline Services operates crawler fleets for pipes from 100 mm to 2,400 mm and push systems for smaller drains, across the UAE, Saudi Arabia and Qatar. We have surveyed and cleaned airport storm networks, hotel kitchen drains, metro station drainage and 6.8 km of DN1800 trunk sewer for the National Water Company. Every survey comes with a full HD video, a coded report and a rehabilitation recommendation. If you have a network you have never seen from the inside, that is the place to start.
