Spiral wound lining is a trenchless method that builds a brand-new structural pipe inside an existing sewer, storm drain or culvert by winding a continuous PVC profile strip into a tight helix. It is one of the few techniques that can rehabilitate very large, non-circular or heavily deformed pipes without excavation, and it can usually be installed while the line stays in service.
A winding machine is lowered into a manhole or access chamber. It feeds a profiled PVC strip, with interlocking edges, and winds it in a continuous spiral along the host pipe. Each turn locks mechanically into the previous one, forming a watertight, jointless liner. Depending on the design, the annular space between the new liner and the old pipe is then filled with a cementitious grout, which bonds the system together and gives it full structural capacity even where the host pipe has lost all integrity.
The finished liner is designed to ASTM F1741 and ASTM F1697 as a fully structural pipe, independent of the host. PVC is immune to the hydrogen-sulphide corrosion that destroys concrete sewers in hot climates, and the smooth bore typically improves hydraulic capacity despite the slight reduction in diameter. Design life exceeds 50 years.
Cured-in-place pipe remains our first choice for most lines up to about 1,200 mm, especially where bends, laterals or pressure are involved. Spiral wound becomes the better option for large-diameter gravity sewers and storm drains, for pipes that cannot be taken out of service, and where the host pipe is too deformed for a factory-made liner to fit. In practice, many municipal programmes combine both: CIPP for the collector network and spiral wound for the trunk mains.
We deploy spiral wound lining for municipalities, utilities and infrastructure contractors across the UAE, Saudi Arabia and Qatar as part of a complete trenchless toolbox that also includes CIPP, epoxy lining, point repairs and robotic cleaning. Every project starts with a CCTV condition survey and a hydraulic and structural design, and ends with a verified, warranted pipe. If you operate large sewers or culverts that are corroding, leaking or losing capacity, ask us for an assessment.
